Thunderbolts ends DISAPPOINTINGLY in the box office

Thunderbolts* has been seen as a critically successful film, with many critics and reporters enjoying the film and saying that it’s a major step up from previous Marvel entries since 2020. According to Variety, Marvel Studios spent $180 Million to produce the film, $100 Million to send the movie out into the markets. This means that Marvel Studios needed to make $425 Million worldwide to just break even. The current Box Office total worldwide is at $377 Million which means it’s officially fallen short as the New Avengers rebrand couldn’t bring in new viewers as its exited cinemas.

Deadline also spoke with Shawn Robbins who is a Movie analysis director at Fandango and he says “Marvel’s calculus has changed. We’re in a new era where not every Marvel movie is going to hit $1 billion.” which is extremely interesting as the viewership and momentum has really died down since Spider Man No Way Home in 2021.

This is also very interesting as Kevin Feige (Head of Marvel) had come out publicly and noted that watching all the Marvel content is starting to feel like homework and they are now switch to quality over quantity once again as they used to do back when Marvel was at its viewership prime. Kevin Feige has mentioned that they will only be releasing “one or two television series per year” and also said that there will only be a couple of films per year too.
