The Phoenician scheme
The Phoenician Scheme is a massive surprise this year. Wes Andersons work in previous years with films such as Fantastic Mr Fox and The Grand Budapest Hotel were classic masterpieces but in recent years he lost many people with work such as Astroid City. This film however has brought us back on the Wes Anderson train and now we want to see more. This was finally a narrative that you could easily follow and have fun, a really interesting story that you don’t have to decipher due to his stories being cryptic and confusing. It was a actually quite heartwarming story, with Zsa Zsa (Benicio Del Toro) finally becoming an honest and honourable man after being a dodgy business man and a distant family man. I feel like everyone was fantastic in this, with all the ensemble cast playing a hilarious and crucial role to the plot. Micheal Cera shines in this film, his range is shown off in this creative piece of art and he is absolutely hilarious too. Mia Threapleton deserves credit here too, her dead pan humour really works in this and I hope to see her in more film in the future.
Obviously as this is a Wes Anderson film we have to talk about his filmmaking and Directing in this film. It heavily reminded me of The Grand Budapest Hotel with so many unique pieces of filmmaking architecture and cinematography, with Wes Andersons style being shown in its purest form. So many moments throughout this film, despite having a bit of a dull colour palate at times, still look stunning and really incapsulated the world that Anderson wanted to create.
Overall, Wes Anderson is back, creating fun and interesting stories that everyone can follow along with and have a great time, still incorporating his unique and fantastic cinematography and visuals.
